I’ve always been very partial to Mercutio from Romeo & Juliet.
For such a minor character he has this huge personality. He’s dirty, he’s funny, he’s passionate. He overflows with imagination and biting satire. His views on love and sex are very contemporary in some ways, the way he tells Romeo that the best way to get over a broken heart is to have sex. If love be rough with you, be rough with love.
Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down
And yet he’s fiercly loyal to Romeo at the same time; indeed duelling with Tybalt when Romeo refused to and ultimately dying in that same duel. A death that began the tragic turn of events that make up the rest of the story.
Of course, even as he’s dying, he’s still making plays on words! Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man
